Happy Birthday Alice!

Alice was born on 13/02/1915 in Patricroft, Manchester to proud parents Elizabeth and Charles Wilson, she has an older sister, Muriel, and a younger brother, John. This year Alice is celebrating her 103rd Birthday! She remembers having a lovely childhood despite the experience of major historical events, including 2 world wars. She was only a baby during World War 1, but remembers vividly World War 2 when she lived in Barrow and was signed up for “War work”. In her early twenties she married John Ramsbottom, known as Jack at St Cuthberts Church. Two daughters Judith Helen and Kathryn Gill soon made the family complete. Alice also had a secret passion for motorbikes and, unbeknown to her parents, often went pillion riding with her friends. She says if she could still get on a motorbike, she would love to have another go. Alice and her family enjoyed holidays as often as possible in different areas, including France, Switzerland, Scotland, Wales and in Alice’s words the posh part of Blackpool (St Annes). Alice and her siblings were all teachers. Alice did teacher training in Ripon, then went on to teach in Ripon, Yorkshire, followed by teaching in Barrow in Furness, then St Georges in Stockport as a primary teacher eventually progressing on to be Head Mistress. St Georges school have arranged to surprise Alice by visiting Fernlea and singing for her on her birthday. A party has been...
